Worldwide Broker NetworkTM will cap a year-long 25th anniversary celebration by holding its semiannual Global Conference in Santiago, Chile on October 29-November 1. Approximately 160 members from WBN partner and associate firms on six continents, along with a dozen senior insurance company executives, will join in discussions on insurance and employee benefits solutions, selling and servicing for cross-border transactions.
The conference will kick off on Wednesday afternoon [29th] with the “WBN Speaker Series,” featuring Evelyn Matthei, former Chilean Presidential Candidate, Secretary of Labor, and Secretary of Social Security. Ms. Matthei, who also previously served in the Chilean Senate, was the Independent Democrat Union Party’s nominee for President of Chile in the 2013 elections. While studying at the Economics Institute of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Ms. Matthei worked as an assistant professor and research assistant. She collaborated with current President Sebastián Piñera on a Latin American Economic Commission paper on poverty in the region; she also helped develop a textbook on Monetary Theory with Professor Hernando Cortés for the Economics Institute of her University.
“We’ll begin the day by initiating our new “Joining Hands Worldwide” philanthropic program. Member firms and their employees are donating to a local program selected by our host country member. In this case, a check combining all contributions will be presented when board members and conference participants tour Children’s Hospital Calvo McKenna, founded in 1942 and one of the most important children’s hospitals in Chile,” said Markham McKnight, WBN Board Chairman and President of BancorpSouth Insurance of Baton Rouge, LA. He added that WBN plans to continue and grow the program at its 2015 conferences in Washington, D.C. next April and Budapest in October.
Hosting the conference is Santiago-based Lilienfeld Corredores de Seguros, which also traces its roots to 1942 and today is one of the largest privately held, independent Insurance brokers and employee benefits consultants in Chile.
WBN has conducted two global conferences each year since its formation in 1989, the only exception being October 2001 when the conference was cancelled following the September 11 attacks. With its growth to nearly 100 member firms in more than 100 countries and territories, each conference now is based around separate tracks targeted specifically to firm management, insurance specialties, employee benefits consulting, regional meetings of WBN members and Young Professionals representing the future of their firms. Training remains a strong element of each conference, sponsored and led by insurance company experts and by WBN Member and Associate Member Firms which specialize in related disciplines, including worldwide captives; global engineering services; risk management services; insurance brokerage management, analysis and mergers & acquisitions; international legal services; actuarial services; forensic accounting; and international employee benefits.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, WBN has grown from 9 firms in Western Europe to nearly 100 firms spanning the globe and serving clients through approximately 500 offices on all six inhabited continents. These generally are the largest independently owned firms in their respective markets, providing the highest degree of client service to both insurance and employee benefits clients. As a result, WBN has become an important part of the industry’s distribution network, generating an estimated $35 billion in Property & Casualty and Employee Benefits Premiums annually.
